XG are back world-building with their latest single Howling
XG have never been afraid to take risks. Since bursting into the K-pop industry in 2022 with their debut single Tippy Toes, the group have torn up the rule book regarding what it means to be a K-pop group, fusing surreal imagery with laser-sharp rapping that defies their tender ages.
XG (short for Extraordinary Girls) are unique in the industry. All seven members, while currently based in South Korea, are all originally from Japan, and their songs consist of a mix of Japanese, Korean and English. They are a new wave of artists bringing K-pop to a more diverse audience. In particular, their rap XYPHERS have turned heads, with old-school fans of hip-hop, who have been forced to acknowledge their stellar technique and reverential references to the rappers who paved the way.
With their newest single Howling the group has reunited with acclaimed director Cho Gi-Seok, building upon the relationship formed from the music videos of GRL GVNG and WOKE UP. Howling expands the motifs laid out in their previous songs, reinforcing the cosmic wolf posse lore crafted since their debut. It feels with their newest single, XG are building their world and taking it even further. If their album New DNA was all about laying down the foundations for their mythology and lore, then it feels like their latest is all about giving that world texture and depth.
Rather than the “sky” being the limit for this intergalactic girl posse, it feels more apt to say the entire “universe” is fast becoming their playground. Watch this space.
